Supporting TechSoc and communities that power our industry
By Daniel Watson, Principal Consultant
This year, Tilt Consulting made the decision to become a sponsor of the Signal & Electrical Engineers’ Technical Society (TechSoc). I am also delighted to join the TechSoc organising committee, giving Tilt an opportunity to contribute not just financially, but through time, experience and practical support.
TechSoc is a volunteer-led organisation that brings together people from across railway engineering, as well as the wider transport sector, to learn, share experiences and build professional networks.
For us, supporting it was a simple decision, and a good one.
Like many organisations, Tilt has benefited from the wider professional communities. Conferences, technical presentations, mentoring, and informal conversations all help develop people, share ideas, and strengthen our industry. Yet many of these opportunities exist only because individuals are willing to volunteer to make them happen.
The rail industry is inherently collaborative. Every successful project depends on operators, infrastructure managers, suppliers, consultants, and regulators working together to solve complex and increasingly interconnected challenges. Communities such as TechSoc create a space for people to share expertise, learn from one another, and build relationships beyond a single project or employer. Importantly, they also give those earlier in their careers access to vital professional networks.
This is not my first association with TechSoc. I was on the organising committee in the early 2000s, where I saw and experienced the benefits in bringing the events together for such a minimal outlay for its members. Sponsorship is valuable, but there is something equally important about contributing with my skillset, time and enthusiasm. Being part of the committee gives me the opportunity to help shape events, support the volunteers who make them happen, share some of my own experience and listen to and learn from others across the industry.
At Tilt, supporting TechSoc through both financial and practical commitments aligns closely with our values. As a specialist consultancy, our success depends on expertise, collaboration, and the continual development of people. Supporting a community that promotes those same principles feels like a natural extension of what we do.
Most importantly, these communities help nurture an environment where knowledge and experience are shared rather than guarded. In a sector as interconnected as rail, that collective exchange benefits us all.
Our collective support of TechSoc is still relatively new, and my own involvement with the organising committee is only just reigniting, but both have already reinforced something I have long believed: strong industries are built on strong communities.
